Thomas Parrish's three current books are The Grouchy Grammarian (2002), Caricature of back view of The Grouchy GrammarianThe Submarine: A History (2004), and Restoring Shakertown (2005).

Restoring Shakertown chronicles the preservation of the historic landmark at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky.

The Submarine follows Parrish's earlier, and highly respected, books of contemporary history, including:

  • The American Codebreakers: The U.S. Role in Breaking the Nazi Codes (1986);
  • Roosevelt and Marshall: Partners in Politics and War (1989);
  • The Cold War Encyclopedia (1996);
  • Berlin in the Balance, 1945-1949 (1998);
  • The Simon and Schuster Encyclopedia of World War II (editorial director and contributor) (1978). This book was chosen by the American Library Association as one of the two best works of history for its year and also appeared in a listing as one of the top reference works of its decade. The Newsweek reviewer commented: "I do not see how the job could have been better done."
In creating The Grouchy Grammarian, the author drew on this background as well as on his years of study of language and his general publishing experience as an editor in Chicago and New York.* He holds two degrees from the University of Chicago.

*He also, of course, drew on his long friendship with the Grouchy Grammarian.
